How many pages should you read a day?
There is no single page count that fits every reader or book. If you have a deadline, divide the pages remaining by your available reading days. Without a deadline, begin with a short session or a small number of pages you can comfortably repeat, then adjust from your own experience.
With a deadline, calculate rather than guess
Use the free pages-per-day calculator. It asks for pages remaining and a finish date, with a choice to start today or tomorrow. It does not ask for an arbitrary start date. Choose the calendar timezone you want the plan to use; it determines which civil date counts as today.
The finish day is included. Starting today includes today too; starting tomorrow excludes today. The tool counts calendar dates, not elapsed blocks of 24 hours, so daylight-saving changes do not add or remove a reading day. It divides pages remaining by those days and rounds up to a whole page.
For an illustrative example, 301 pages across 10 reading days gives 31 pages a day. Nine days at 31 pages leave 22 pages for the final day. The rounded-up number is a planning target, not a prediction or an instruction to reread surplus pages. With 300 pages over 10 days, the plan is exactly 30 pages a day.
Be clear about the calendar
If today in the selected timezone is 20 October and the finish date is 29 October, starting today gives 10 calendar days. Starting tomorrow gives 9. These are example dates, not the tool’s fixed default. The live tool uses today in your selected timezone.
A finish date before today is invalid. Starting tomorrow with today as the finish date leaves no reading days and is invalid for positive pages. Zero remaining pages means you are already finished, not that you need a daily quota. The tool accepts whole page counts from zero to 1,000,000 and does not silently round an invalid fractional input.
It spreads the plan over every included calendar day; it does not offer a weekday-only schedule or select specific days off. If you cannot read on some dates, account for that in a separate plan or choose a more workable deadline. Inputs stay in your browser, with no signup, book title or reading history required.
Without a deadline, start from the book in front of you
Try a short session and notice how it fits the time you actually have. A dense chapter might call for less page counting than a familiar novel. You can choose minutes as your intention when they describe the task better. Audiobook minutes should not be automatically converted into pages.
Farnam Street’s 25-page routine is one writer’s approach, not evidence of an optimal amount for everyone. We checked that source on 20 October 2026. Its target can be inspiration, but it need not become your rule. This is practical planning guidance, not medical advice or a promise of improved comprehension.
Copy a small reading plan

Change the plan when the week changes
Re-enter the pages you still have left. Extend the date if necessary, or accept a smaller scope. You do not have to double tomorrow’s target to repay a missed day. A calculator can show that a deadline is unrealistic without making a judgement about you.
Books vary in length, layout and difficulty, so an annual book goal answers a different question from a daily-pages plan. Do not turn the example above into a guaranteed number of books per year. A reading journal can capture what the numbers leave out.
